PETALING JAYA, Nov 13 — Assunta Hospital’s “Run with Assunta – Heal with Care 2024”, held on November 9, 2024, at Laman MBPJ, Petaling Jaya, brought together 1,000 participants to support the hospital’s charitable arm, Assunta Integrated Social Services (ASSISS).
With the contributions of nearly 30 sponsors, donors, and participants, the event raised RM88,000 to fund free medical treatment for the most underprivileged.
The run featured both 5km and 8km categories, providing participants of all ages an opportunity to contribute to this noble cause.
Among the participants was a remarkable 93-year-old, the oldest runner in the event, who joined the 5km category, inspiring attendees with their dedication to this meaningful cause.
The 5km and 8km flag-off was officiated by Mohd Fauzi Maarop, the Deputy Secretary (Management) of Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ), representing the Mayor of Petaling Jaya, alongside Christopher Chua, the chairman of Assunta Hospital, Wilson Choo, Assunta Hospital chief executive officer, and Elizabeth Tan, a member of the Assunta Hospital Board of Directors and a sister from the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM), in honour of the founding sisters who established Assunta Hospital in 1954.
Since its early days offering free clinics to underprivileged populations, Assunta Hospital has expanded its charitable mission with the founding of ASSISS.
Today, ASSISS is an integrated support system encompassing critical health and welfare services, including:
- ASSISS Palliative Services: Offering compassionate end-of-life care.
- ASSISS Geriatric Enrichment Services:Supporting the elderly with comprehensive health and wellness programmes.
- ASSISS Wound Care Services: Providing essential care for chronic and acute wounds.
- Assunta Mobile Clinic: Bringing medical assistance to remote and underserved communities.
- ASSISS Stroke Ancillary Programme – Aiding stroke recovery with specialised support,
- Pastoral Care: Ensuring spiritual and emotional support.
- Social Welfare Programme: Encompassing outpatient and inpatient treatment options.
Through ASSISS, Assunta Hospital offers free health care and social services to the poorest of the poor, primarily serving families with a combined income below RM2,500 per month to ensure that no one is denied essential treatment due to financial constraints.
In his closing remarks, Choo emphasised the impact of these contributions: “To everyone here today, please know that your support to the hospital and today’s event makes a meaningful difference.
“Every donation and every step taken helps ASSISS continue expanding its reach, delivering compassionate care where it’s most needed.”
As a not-for-profit hospital, Assunta channels 50 per cent of its surplus to ASSISS every year. This means that when patients pay their bills, a portion is directed toward funding free medical treatment for the poorest of the poor.
Every visit not only supports personal health but also contributes directly to vital health care services for those in need.
Donations are welcomed via Assunta Hospital’s website. Every donation helps sustain critical health care services for vulnerable families in Malaysia.
